Be serious in enforcing your laws, Senate President charges NASC

By Abbanobi -Eku Onyekachi, Abuja

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, has charged the National Assembly Service Commission (NASC) to firmly and seriously enforce its laws in the discharge of its statutory functions. Akpabio gave this directive on Monday during a farewell visit by the outgoing Chairman of the NASC, Engr. Ahmed Kadi Amshi, and members of the Commission, who also presented their exit report.

Akpabio expressed his disappointment at the disregard for the provisions of the enabling laws by some top National Assembly officials. These officials have shown reluctance to disengage from service at the end of their tenure, as prescribed by the laws. The Senate President emphasized the importance of constant consultations between the Commission and the Presiding Officers of the Assembly to prevent such disregard.

The NASC is established by the National Assembly Service Act (Repeal and Re-enactment) 2014, which repealed the National Assembly Service Act 2004. The Commission is responsible for the appointment, promotion, and discipline of staff of the National Assembly (NASS). Akpabio’s directive is aimed at ensuring that the Commission carries out its functions effectively and in accordance with the law.

The Senate President’s call for the enforcement of laws comes as the National Assembly is working to grant full autonomy to local governments. Akpabio has identified the state and local government joint accounts committee and the state Independent Electoral Commission laws as legislations that the National Assembly would amend to achieve this goal.

The NASS has been working to strengthen its institutions and ensure that its laws are enforced. Akpabio’s directive to the NASC is part of this effort. The Senate President has emphasized the importance of the Commission’s role in ensuring that the National Assembly operates effectively and in accordance with the law.

The outgoing Chairman of the NASC, Engr. Ahmed Kadi Amshi, and members of the Commission presented their exit report to Akpabio during the farewell visit. The report highlights the Commission’s achievements and challenges during their tenure.

In conclusion, Akpabio’s directive to the NASC is a call to action to ensure that the National Assembly’s laws are enforced. The Senate President’s emphasis on the importance of the Commission’s role in ensuring the effective operation of the National Assembly is a step in the right direction. As the National Assembly continues to work on strengthening its institutions, Akpabio’s leadership is crucial in ensuring that the laws are enforced and the Assembly operates effectively.
