Professor Abubakar Sadeeque Abba has emerged as the new Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of University of Abuja (UniAbuja).
Professor Abba, from the Department of Political Science, was elected during the university’s 187th Regular Senate Meeting held on Wednesday.
In a statement signed by Dr. Habib Yakoob, Acting Director of Information and University Relations, the Senate—comprising 192 members participating both physically and virtually—deliberated on several key issues, including the adoption of a revised academic calendar for the 2024/2025 session and the scheduling of the next convocation ceremony.
The Senate also expressed confidence in the university’s Governing Council, chaired by Air Vice Marshal Sadiq Isma’ila Kaita (rtd.), for its transparent and credible process in selecting the Vice-Chancellor.
“The Senate unanimously passed a vote of confidence in the University’s Governing Council, under the esteemed leadership of AVM Sadiq Isma’ila Kaita, in recognition of its successful and commendable conduct of the Vice Chancellor’s selection process. The process was widely acknowledged as fair, transparent, and credible, culminating in an outcome that has been universally accepted,” the statement said.
In addition, the Senate congratulated the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi, and pledged its full support for her administration.
“The Senate extended its heartfelt congratulations to the newly appointed Vice Chancellor, Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi, and pledged its full support and cooperation in advancing the university’s vision and mission under her leadership,” it said.
However, the Senate voiced concerns over the conduct of certain staff members accused of tarnishing the institution’s reputation for personal gain and called for disciplinary measures against those involved.
It further condemned individuals spreading misinformation and blackmail through the media, urging the university’s management to take appropriate action.
“The Senate unequivocally condemned the actions of certain individuals who, driven by personal interests, have sought to tarnish the reputation of the university through the dissemination of falsehoods, calumny, and blackmail via the media.
“Accordingly, the Senate urged the university’s management to take all necessary measures, including the implementation of disciplinary actions, against any individual or group engaging in misconduct, illegality, or activities that undermine the good name and integrity of the institution,” it added.
