Interior Minister advocates for practical skill acquisition in tertiary institutions

The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has emphasized the need for tertiary institutions in Nigeria to focus on practical skills acquisition and leverage technology to drive innovation. This call to action was made during a meeting with a delegation from Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, led by the Acting Rector, Mr. Adegun Olorunwa, at the Minister’s Office in Abuja, according to a press statement from. The the Director of Press and Public Relations, Dr Ozoya Imohimi on Thursday.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo commended the polytechnic’s efforts in promoting career development, but noted that Nigeria’s focus on certificates rather than skills has hindered its potential. He urged the institution to foster innovative thinking, entrepreneurship, and creativity among students, emphasizing the importance of practical skills in today’s job market.

The Minister challenged students to develop ideas that could lead to significant advancements in various sectors, including information technology and agriculture. He also stressed the need for a shift in mindset towards wealth creation and innovation, saying, “It is not about just meeting wants; it is about addressing needs. We must focus on being innovative.”

Dr. Tunji-Ojo expressed optimism that, with focused efforts and collaboration, Rufus Giwa Polytechnic can lead the way in creating solutions to address both local and global challenges. The meeting also discussed updates on the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) projects, with the Minister assuring the acting Rector that he would ensure the projects continue without interruption.

In his remarks, Mr. Adegun Olorunwa commended the Minister for facilitating projects in the institution during his tenure as Chairman of the House of Representatives’ Committee on Niger Delta Development Affairs.
