Liberia seeks collaboration with Nigeria to combat climate change

By Abbanobi -Eku Onyekachi, Abuja

In a bid to combat the devastating effects of climate change, a delegation of parliamentarians and environmentalists from Liberia has sought collaboration with Nigeria. Led by Hon. Ernest Manseah Snr, the Liberian team held separate sessions with the Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Ecology and Climate Change at the National Assembly on Thursday.

Hon. Manseah Snr praised Nigeria’s efforts in mitigating the effects of climate change, noting that the country is ahead of others globally in this regard. “We have come to learn from you, distinguished members of this committee, on how Nigeria has been mitigating the effects of climate change,” he said.

The Liberian delegation’s visit is timely, given the increasing impact of climate change on African countries. Liberia, in particular, has been experiencing severe flooding, soil erosion, and unpredictable weather patterns, which have severely impacted agriculture and livelihoods ¹.

Nigeria’s experience in addressing climate change can provide valuable lessons for Liberia. The country has developed a National Climate Change Policy and Response Strategy, which outlines measures to mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change.

The collaboration between Liberia and Nigeria is expected to focus on knowledge sharing, capacity building, and joint initiatives to address the impacts of climate change. As Hon. Manseah Snr emphasized, “We need to work together to address the challenges of climate change, which require a collective effort and shared responsibility.”
