Nigeria’s Defence Industries Corporation Set for Major Transformation, Says Matawalle

The Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) is poised to play a key role in driving indigenous defence manufacturing and technological advancements, Minister of State for Defence., Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, has said.

Speaking at the DICON 2024 End-of-Year Celebration at the company’s Kaduna facility, Dr. Matawalle commended the corporation for its contributions to national security and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to boosting local defence production.

A statement issued by his media aide, Ahmad Dan-Wudil, quoted the minister as saying “I am here not only to celebrate your success but also to offer words of encouragement as we step into the year 2025.”

Reflecting on the previous year, Dr. Matawalle brought to the fore several significant milestones, including the Africa Defence Industries Conference, held in Abuja in August 2024. The event drew over 3,000 attendees from more than 30 countries, encouraging collaboration among governments, military officials, and industry experts to enhance Africa’s defence capabilities.

Other notable achievements included the 60th anniversary of DICON and the unveiling of a new corporate logo.
A pivotal moment for Nigeria’s defence sector came with the enactment of the DICON Act 2023, signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on November 23, 2023.

Dr. Matawalle referred to the legislation as a “game changer” that would bolster Nigeria’s military-industrial complex, reduce reliance on foreign imports, and foster innovation through strategic public-private partnerships.

“This Act provides the necessary framework for a self-sufficient military-industrial complex that will meet the evolving security challenges of our nation,” he remarked.

The minister also commended the newly inaugurated DICON Board, chaired by him, for its efforts to revitalize the corporation and improve productivity.

He emphasized DICON’s essential role in supporting President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which focuses on strengthening national security, driving economic growth, and advancing technological progress.

In closing, Dr. Matawalle expressed appreciation for DICON’s leadership and workforce, calling the corporation “the backbone of Nigeria’s security and industrial resilience.”
“Your hard work and commitment inspire confidence in our ability to build a stronger, self-sufficient nation. Together, we will drive the future of Nigeria’s defence industry,” he concluded.
