World Radio Day: Gov Ododo hails radio’s role in democracy, pledges inclusive leadership

As the world marks this year’s World Radio Day, Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has commended the vital role radio plays in strengthening democracy in Nigeria.

Governor Ododo took the opportunity to reaffirm his administration’s dedication to fostering inclusive governance, ensuring that every segment of society has a voice in decision-making.

He emphasized that his government has actively promoted inclusivity by involving youths, women, persons with disabilities, and stakeholders from various ethnic, religious, and political backgrounds.

A statement issued on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Media, Ismaila Isah, quoted the governor as saying: “I am delighted to join the rest of the world in celebrating this year’s World Radio Day. As your Governor, I recognize the immense contribution of radio to our state’s development and the nation at large. Radio has been a trusted companion to millions of people around the world, providing news, entertainment, and education. It has been a powerful tool for social change, promoting understanding and empathy, and providing a platform for all voices to be heard.”

Reflecting on the theme of this year’s event, “Radio and Climate Change,” Governor Ododo highlighted the medium’s crucial role in spreading awareness about climate issues, advocating sustainable practices, and supporting communities affected by environmental challenges.

He noted that radio’s ability to reach a broad audience, break geographical barriers, and amplify diverse voices makes it an essential instrument for unity, social progress, and fostering global understanding.

“As we mark World Radio Day 2025, we are reminded of the importance of radio in promoting development, democracy, human rights, and social change.

“Our investment in climate-resilient agricultural practices and sustainable development, along with our commitment to expanding access to information through broadcasting, particularly radio, aligns with the theme of this year’s celebration.

“Radio has also been a powerful tool for promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance by providing vital information and education on health, education, security, and economic development,” he reaffirmed.

Governor Ododo assured that his administration remains committed to supporting the growth of the radio industry, recognizing its ability to drive positive change, enhance education and healthcare, and stimulate economic progress while ensuring that all communities within the state are represented.
