DWI applauds Obi’s engagement with Gov Mohammed, urges him to align with PDP

A pro-democracy group, Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI), has commended the recent visit of Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, a key leader in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In a statement signed by its Director of Strategic Communication, Dr. AbdulRazak Ahmed, DWI described Obi’s visit as a significant step towards fostering political collaboration and national unity.

“The Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI) extends a warm and enthusiastic welcome to the recent advances made by Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, as he embarks on a significant journey towards political collaboration and national unity,” the statement read.

The group noted that Obi’s meeting with Governor Mohammed, who chairs the PDP Governors Forum, positioned him firmly within mainstream political discourse.

DWI also highlighted Obi’s visit to the Emir of Bauchi, Alhaji (Dr.) Rilwanu Suleiman Adamu, as a mark of respect for traditional institutions and their role in fostering peace and unity.

“Traditional leaders have historically been instrumental in fostering dialogue and understanding among diverse groups, and their involvement in political discussions enhances the legitimacy of efforts aimed at fostering national cohesion,” the statement added.

The organization further praised Governor Mohammed for recognizing Obi’s commitment to nation-building and inclusive leadership. It emphasized the importance of cooperation between political leaders across party lines, calling for unity in pursuit of national progress.

DWI urged Obi to build on the momentum of his engagement by aligning himself with the PDP, arguing that such a move would enhance his political influence.

“In this light, we urge Peter Obi to consolidate the momentum generated by this visit. By aligning himself with the PDP and engaging in meaningful discussions with its leadership, he has the opportunity to redefine his political narrative and amplify his impact on the national stage,” the group stated.

It contrasted Obi’s approach with that of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, asserting that Obi has the potential to play a central role in a transformative political movement.
