The Chairman of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF), Engineer Sola Olofin, has called for stronger protections for workers’ rights and improved workplace safety nationwide.
Speaking in Abuja as he assumed office, Olofin reaffirmed NSITF’s dedication to providing compensation for insured employees affected by workplace injuries, disabilities, diseases, or fatalities.
He emphasized that ensuring social protection for Nigerian workers aligns with Section 17 (3)(c) of the 1999 Constitution, which mandates the government to guarantee adequate welfare for employees.
Highlighting the significance of the Employees’ Compensation Act (ECA) 2010, Olofin stressed that the law strengthens NSITF’s commitment to safeguarding workers’ welfare and dignity.
Recognizing employees as the foundation of the economy, he underscored the need to prioritize their well-being to support sustainable national development.
Despite existing regulations, Olofin noted that many employers have yet to fully comply with the ECA, which requires them to contribute to the Fund. He emphasized the importance of collaboration with labor unions, regulatory bodies, and the private sector to enhance compliance and ensure wider coverage under the scheme.
To boost efficiency, he pledged to work closely with NSITF’s leadership to implement digital solutions that will streamline operations, improve accessibility, and expedite compensation processing.
Reaffirming his commitment to transparency and accountability, Olofin vowed to reposition NSITF for better performance.
“This mandate is not just a legal obligation; it is a moral imperative. It is the foundation upon which a just and equitable labour environment is built.
“As I assume office, I want to make it clear that my vision for the NSITF is one of transparency, efficiency, and accountability. We must reposition the Fund as a globally recognized social security institution that is trusted by employers, employees, and the general public,” he said.
“To achieve this, we must focus on key strategic areas: Strengthening Compliance and Coverage.”
Olofin expressed his gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the opportunity to serve, pledging to lead with integrity, fairness, and a strong commitment to social justice for Nigerian workers.
