Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has made a significant impact on the lives of two young orphans at Infant Jesus Orphanage in Calabar, Cross River State. During his visit to the orphanage, Kalu offered scholarships to 12-year-old twins, Chidera Emmanuela Maduka and Chimankpa Emmanuel Maduka, to study law from primary to university level.
Kalu’s visit was part of the 37th Convocation ceremony and 50th anniversary celebrations of the University of Calabar, his alma mater where he delivered the convocation lecture. The twins’ interest in studying law resonated with Kalu, who expressed his happiness and pride in their aspirations.
In addition to the scholarships, Kalu made a cash donation of N2 million and provided food items to the orphanage. His colleagues from the National Assembly and other well-wishers were inspired by his kindness and made additional donations, totaling N4 million.
The donations included N1 million from members of the House of Representatives, N300,000 from Kalu’s former classmates, N200,000 from a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and N500,000 from the Peace In South East Project (PISE-P).
Kalu emphasized the importance of sustainable support, stating that he wants to create a program that will have a lasting impact on the orphanage. He also highlighted the significance of education, sharing his personal experience of studying under a tree without a classroom and eventually becoming the Deputy Speaker.
The coordinator of the orphanage, Sister Chinyere Chukwuka, expressed her heartfelt gratitude to Kalu and his team, praying for God’s blessings upon them. Kalu’s visit and donations have brought hope and joy to the orphanage, and his commitment to education and sustainable support will undoubtedly have a lasting impact.
Kalu’s actions demonstrate his dedication to giving back to his community and empowering the next generation of leaders. As a prominent legislator and advocate for education, he continues to inspire and make a positive impact on the lives of those around him.
