The Federal Government has pledged full support for the 2025 Stockholm Junior Water Prize competition to encourage young Nigerians in water and environmental innovation projects.
Vice-President Kashim Shettima made the pledge on Thursday through the Deputy Chief of Staff in the Presidency, Senator Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
He said this year’s competition is especially important following talks in Oslo last year and the expected visit of Sweden’s Crown Princess to Nigeria later this year.
The Head of Political and Trade Affairs, Embassy of Sweden in Abuja, Fredrik Åhsberg, said the competition is expected to help young minds tackle global water problems.
Applications in Nigeria will be open from March 27 to May 2, 2025, leading to regional and national finals in August.
For his part, the National Coordinator of the Nigeria Stockholm Junior Water Prize, Ikechukwu Chinemerem, said the initiative woild help prepare secondary and tertiary school students on how to address water challenges early in life.
The competition which involves over 35 countries, is open to Nigerians between 15 to 20 years, and aims to raise awareness about water challenges and climate change.
