A non governmental organization (NGO), the Blessing Projects, on Tuesday donated farm inputs to 135 vulnerable women in Irigwe Chiefdom of Bassa Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau.
Recall that over 50 people were killed and their means of livelihood destroyed in Irigwe chiefdom over a week ago.
The organisation said that gesture was part of its move towards improving the wellbeing of vulnerable women in the community.
Some of the inputs donated include fertiliser, herbicides, improved seeds of soya beans, maize, rice, among others.
Project Manger of the organisation, Mr Lawrence
Zongo, who said that the gesture aimed at encouraging women to venture into farming, maintained that it would further ensure food sufficiency in the state.
“Today, we officially launched a life-changing agricultural empowerment project for women in Irigwe land.
“We have distributed improved seeds of maize, soya beans, and rice, with herbicides, fertilizers, and other farming tools 135 beneficiaries.
“These are largely widows whose husbands were brutally killed during the series of attacks on our communities. These women and their children have been abandoned and forgotten.
“So, this donation which came through individual’s support, is to empower these women through agriculture to become self sufficient,”he said.
Zongo further disclosed that the organisation had procured two tractors which would be used to cultivate farmlands for the women.
One of the beneficiaries, Mrs Tina Ashishe, who thanked the donors for the gesture, promised to put the items to good use.
