The House of Representatives has taken a significant step towards improving maternal health in Nigeria. The lawmakers passed a Bill to establish a National Hospital for Women in Ideato, Imo State, through second reading.
The proposed hospital will specialize in promoting reproductive and maternal health. It will also focus on research, prevention, sensitization, and treatment of obstetrics fistula.
“According to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Nigeria accounts for a significant proportion of the global burden of obstetric fistula, with an estimated 12,000 new cases occurring annually,”said Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere, the bill’s sponsor.
Obstetric fistula and related maternal complications remain a significant public health challenge in Nigeria. Tens of thousands of women live with this preventable condition, often in rural and underserved areas. Ugochinyere noted that poor access to quality maternal healthcare, lack of specialized institutions, and insufficient research infrastructure exacerbate the problem.
The National Hospital for Women will promote excellence in maternal and reproductive health services. It will provide comprehensive care, education, and rehabilitation services for women, especially in relation to obstetrics fistula and other reproductive health issues.
The hospital will improve access to quality healthcare services for women. It will also enhance research capabilities and promote medical tourism. The hospital will serve as a research and training center for health professionals, while enhancing the overall quality of care available to Nigerian women.
The hospital will reduce the prevalence of obstetric fistula and its associated social and economic impacts. This will contribute to the overall well-being and empowerment of women in Nigeria.
The Bill was put to a voice vote by the presiding officer, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, and it was passed. The hospital’s establishment will be a significant step towards addressing maternal health challenges in Nigeria.
The National Hospital for Women will be a dedicated national center of excellence. It will provide treatment, prevention, education, and sensitization services. The hospital will empower women and communities to make informed decisions and seek early intervention when needed.
