North West zone traditional rulers demand constitutional role

By Mercy Aikoye, Abuja

Traditional rulers across Nigeria’s North West Zone have called on the National Assembly to accord them constitutional recognition. They warn that political manipulations undermining national unity and governance must be addressed.

The traditional rulers, led by His Highness, Justice Lawal Hassan Gummi, OFR, Emir of Gummi and Chairman, Coordinating Committee of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council (NTRC), made the call at the North-West Centre B Public Hearing on the 2025 Constitutional Review.

The royal fathers condemned politically motivated interference in traditional institutions, saying it weakens their capacity to assist the government in promoting development and managing conflicts. “Such actions undermine national unity and governance,” they stated.

The traditional rulers proposed the establishment of a National Council of Traditional Rulers, with representation from all states and chaired by the President. The council would serve as an advisory body on matters ranging from development planning to national unity.

The traditional rulers recommended the reinstatement of their status in the Nigerian Constitution and the establishment of State Councils of Traditional Rulers with legal backing. They also called for the inclusion of traditional rulers in the membership of the National Council of State.

The traditional rulers emphasized the need to insulate themselves from partisan politics, maintaining loyalty to the government while refraining from political engagement. They also stressed the need for adequate funding to enable traditional institutions to carry out their responsibilities effectively.

The traditional rulers expressed hope that the constitutional review process would mark a turning point in recognizing and preserving the legacy and relevance of traditional governance in modern Nigeria. “Let us build on our rich heritage and work together towards a more prosperous and united Nigeria,” they urged.

The constitutional review process presents an opportunity for Nigeria to redefine the role of traditional institutions in modern governance. The traditional rulers’ demands highlight the importance of recognizing and valuing their contributions to national development and unity.
