DHQ boosts non-kinetic approach with CDS basketball championship

The Defence Headquarters on Sunday announced that the planned Fourth Edition of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Unity Basketball Championship (South-West Zone), will hold from 30th September to 5th October 2025 at the National Stadium and Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.

This is contained in a press statement signed by the Director Defence Information, Defence Headquarters, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau.

The DDI ssid the annual championship is part of the CDS’ non-kinetic approach to strengthening security while fostering unity, discipline, and teamwork among Nigerian youths.

“Through the power of sports, the tournament seeks to instill values of peace, resilience, and nation-building across communities.

“The championship is expected to feature 12 elite male basketball teams drawn from the South-West and neighbouring states, including a military team. There will also be Veterans’ exhibition matches and halftime entertainment.

“Cash prizes, medals, trophies, and certificates will be awarded to participating teams, while special recognition awards including Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Tournament Best will receive rewards.

“The Objectives of the Tournament is to Promote unity and peace through sports and engaging youths in positive and productive activities, steering them away from social vices, strengthen civil-military relations through sportsmanship and fair play, and Identify, nurture emerging basketball talents who can represent Nigeria internationally.

“The CDS emphasised that“the Unity Basketball Tournament is more than just a game; it is a platform to unite communities, inspire the youth, and reinforce the values of teamwork and discipline. Through non-kinetic approaches, we aim to promote a stronger, more united Nigeria.”

“The grand finale and closing ceremony will showcase an exhibition game featuring veteran players, musical performances, and the official presentation of trophies and medals to outstanding athletes and teams.
