Sen. Opeyemi leads debate on ₦58.47trn 2026 Appropriation Bill

Senate Leader Bamidele Michael Opeyemi, led the debate on the 2026 Appropriation Bill, totaling ₦58,472,628,944,759, aimed at driving national development and consolidating reforms.

The bill outlines aggregate expenditure as follows: ₦4.097 trillion for Statutory Transfers, ₦15.909 trillion for Debt Service, ₦15.252 trillion for Recurrent Expenditure, and ₦23.214 trillion for Capital Expenditure.

Senator Bamidele emphasized the bill’s focus on consolidating macroeconomic stability, improving the business environment, promoting job-rich growth, and strengthening human capital.

The Senate will scrutinize the bill to ensure transparency, fiscal discipline, and alignment with national priorities, with a focus on security, education, healthcare, infrastructure, and agriculture.

The bill reflects a balance between fiscal constraints and growth imperatives, with a projected deficit of 4.28% of GDP, within approved medium-term fiscal parameters.

However, capital expenditure prioritized for growth and infrastructure development, recurrent spending restrained with strict cost control measures, debt service allocation reflects existing obligations and, statutory transfers fulfill constitutional obligations

Senator Bamidele urged colleagues to give the bill a favorable second reading and commit it to the Appropriations Committee for detailed consideration.
