Newly appointed Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, on Wednesday expressed surprise at his appointment and vowed to prioritize citizens’ trust, human rights, and internal discipline as he takes charge of the Nigeria Police Force.
Speaking with State House correspondents shortly after his decoration with his new rank by President Bola Tinubu at the Aso Rock Villa, Disu described the moment as unexpected and emotional.
“It came at a time I was not expecting it,” he said, thanking President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for finding him worthy of leading the force.
Disu said he was deeply moved when the President referenced his past postings and achievements during the announcement.
“It shows the President took his time to monitor officers working everywhere in the country,” he said, adding that he sees the appointment as a challenge to deliver peace and professionalism nationwide.
Outlining his priorities, the new police chief said his first engagement would be with officers and men of the force, emphasizing that citizens must be treated as “the boss.”
“No police anywhere in the world can succeed without the cooperation of members of the public,” Disu said, stressing the need to rebuild public trust.
He pledged to improve officers’ welfare to boost morale, while drawing a firm line against misconduct.
“The era of impunity is over,” he declared. “There will be zero tolerance for corruption, and we will ensure strict adherence to human rights.”
Disu also acknowledged Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges, particularly insurgency, commending officers for their hard work and promising to better channel their efforts toward improved outcomes.
“All I need to do is to channel their morale and their thoughts to make everything better,” he said.
