Dr. Donald Peterson, Chairman of the D’ Peterson Foundation, has announced a ₦1,000,000 cash reward for every First-Class graduate from Ika Nation and non-indigenes studying within the region. The initiative is designed to encourage academic excellence and motivate students across the nation.
Speaking at the launch in Agbor, Dr. Peterson said: “This is more than a reward. It is an investment in the future leaders of Ika Nation and beyond.” He urged students to aim high and embrace a culture of excellence.
The announcement drew excitement from students and educators alike. Many hailed it as a historic step toward recognizing hard work and achievement. Community leaders described it as a bold initiative that could reshape education in the region.
Dr. Peterson said education is key to progress. “I am not okay if my neighbour is not okay. My children’s future is not secure if I do not fight for the future of the child next door,” he said. His foundation has long supported students from primary to PhD levels.
Past initiatives include scholarships and cash prizes at the University of Delta, Agbor convocation ceremonies. This latest reward, however, is the largest announced by the foundation to date.
Non-indigenes studying in Ika Nation universities are also eligible for the reward. The foundation said this is intended to promote inclusivity and merit-based recognition.
Education experts said the cash incentive could boost student performance and increase competition for top grades. “This will push students to excel and prepare them for national and international opportunities,” one expert said.
Community leaders welcomed the initiative, saying it will strengthen education and socio-economic development in the region. Scholars who benefit are expected to become future leaders and innovators.
The foundation has emphasized that the program is about impact, not publicity. “We want to transform lives and empower students to reach their full potential,” Dr. Peterson said.
