FG, AGFAN partner to revive groundnut economy, boost job creation

By Chuks Oyema-Aziken

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to collaborate with the Afrigroundnut Farmers Association of Nigeria (AGFAN) to enhance agricultural productivity, generate employment, and drive sustainable economic growth nationwide.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, disclosed this on Monday in Abuja while receiving a delegation of AGFAN led by its President, Abdullahi Muhammad Isa.

According to a statement issued by the Head of Information and Public Relations, Chris Ugwuegbulam, the SGF—represented by the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office (GSO), Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana—emphasised the critical role of groundnut production in Nigeria’s economic development, both historically and as a pathway for future growth.

He described groundnut as more than a staple crop, recalling the era of the famous groundnut pyramids in Northern Nigeria in the 1940s and 1950s, which significantly boosted the nation’s GDP and supported early economic expansion.

Akume commended AGFAN for its support of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and urged the association to mobilise its members across the 36 states in support of the President’s re-election in 2027. He reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening the agricultural sector to ensure food security and economic prosperity.

Earlier, AGFAN President, Abdullahi Muhammad Isa, assured the government of the association’s readiness to operate within a sustainable framework.

He noted that any support received—whether in the form of seedlings, fertilisers, or equipment—would translate into increased productivity, improved economic returns, and meaningful contributions to national development.

He stressed that mechanisation remains vital to achieving large-scale agricultural output, improving efficiency, and positioning Nigeria competitively in the global export market.

Isa also reaffirmed the association’s support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Tinubu administration, pledging to mobilise its nationwide membership towards ensuring electoral success in the 2027 general elections.

“We are committed to supporting a platform that aligns with our aspirations and enables us to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s development,” he said.
