Senator Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan, the 14th President of the Senate, has expressed gratitude to supporters who contributed to a grassroots fundraising initiative that generated approximately ₦188 million in pledges and donations. The funds are intended to support Lawan’s bid for the APC governorship nomination in the 2027 Yobe State election.
The fundraiser was held on Sunday in Damaturu, the capital of Yobe State, and was organized by the Coalition of Yobe East Progressive Youths, led by Dr. Mohammed Goni Yerima. Lawan commended the group for demonstrating “responsible citizenship” and redefining grassroots political participation.
According to preliminary reports, funds were raised through pledges, cash donations, and bank transfers into a dedicated Sterling Bank account. Lawan noted that the most touching aspect of the drive was the significant number of small contributions, ranging from ₦100 to ₦3,000, made by widows, mechanic apprentices, traders, and students.
“This is the true definition of grassroots participation and community ownership,” Lawan said. “You have not only raised funds for forms; you have redefined what it means to be progressive citizens of Yobe State.”
Lawan emphasized that the gesture represents an investment in a shared vision for an open, accountable, and transparent government owned by the people of Yobe State. He expressed his desire to serve, saying it is a response to the call of the people.
The former Senate President thanked supporters for their generosity and urged them to continue praying for his success. The fundraising initiative is seen as a significant boost to Lawan’s bid for the APC governorship nomination.
