The Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria (SCSN) has called on relevant authorities to adhere strictly to the rule of law in the continued detention of former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai.
The call was contained in a six-paragraph statement signed by the Secretary-General of SCSN, Nafiu Baba Ahmad, mni, and dated August 31, 2026.
The Council said El-Rufai was entitled to his fundamental rights and presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
It expressed concern over the circumstances surrounding his continued detention and the apparent difficulty in meeting his bail conditions, saying the situation could be inconsistent with established legal procedures and constitutional safeguards.
SCSN said Nigeria, as a constitutional democracy, must respect the rights and liberties of all citizens regardless of their status, political affiliation or personal disposition.
It stressed that due process, fair hearing and lawful detention were fundamental pillars of justice that must be upheld at all times.
The Council also clarified that it did not support or condone criminality in any form, but warned that the pursuit of justice must itself be conducted within the framework of justice and the law.
According to SCSN, actions perceived as arbitrary or politically motivated could undermine public confidence in state institutions and erode democratic governance.
It therefore urged the authorities to ensure that due process was followed at every stage and refrain from actions that could be perceived as politically motivated persecution.
The Council said Nigeria’s unity and long-term stability depended on the credibility of its institutions and the trust of citizens, stressing that justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done.
It maintained that consistent, impartial and lawful application of justice remained a strong safeguard for national cohesion and sustainable development.
