The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called for greater attention to adult education as part of efforts to improve literacy and promote national development.
Senator Tinubu made the call in a message commemorating the 2026 International Literacy Day, observed on Tuesday, September 8, with the theme, “Literacy for People, the Planet and Prosperity.”
She said literacy remained fundamental to personal empowerment and national development, stressing the need to ensure that Nigerians of all ages have access to learning opportunities.
According to her, particular attention should be given to adult education, noting that adults who acquire basic literacy, digital and financial skills would be better positioned to improve their livelihoods and contribute meaningfully to the economy.
“When adults can read, write and acquire basic digital and financial skills, they are better equipped to improve their livelihoods, grow their businesses, make informed decisions, and support their children’s education,” she said.
The First Lady said the 60th anniversary of International Literacy Day provided an opportunity for Nigeria to renew its commitment to ensuring that no citizen is denied access to education because of age or circumstance.
She called for collective efforts by government, communities and other stakeholders to build a society where literacy is accessible to all.
“Let us work together to build a more literate, productive, and prosperous nation,” she urged.
