The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has commended the Director-General of the Maryam Babangida National Centre for Women Development (MBNCWD), Dr. Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, for her advocacy for women’s leadership in the media and the inclusion of persons with disabilities.
The council gave the commendation in a birthday message to the 16th Director-General of the Centre, praising her contributions to gender equality, professional development and inclusive leadership.
In a statement signed by the NUJ FCT Council Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike, the union described Benjamins-Laniyi’s leadership as a combination of strategic vision, courage and commitment to equity.
Ike said the MBNCWD director-general had consistently championed opportunities for women to occupy leadership positions in the media, particularly through mentorship and initiatives aimed at enabling more women to influence public discourse and policymaking.
According to her, Benjamins-Laniyi’s advocacy has helped inspire women journalists and create pathways for greater participation in decision-making across the media industry.
The NUJ FCT chairman also highlighted her commitment to persons with disabilities, noting that her advocacy had drawn greater institutional attention to accessibility, representation and inclusive programmes.
She said Benjamins-Laniyi’s leadership extended beyond policy initiatives, describing her as a person admired for her integrity, compassion and collaborative approach to engaging stakeholders across different sectors.
Ike further noted that under her leadership, the Centre had continued to strengthen its role in promoting gender-responsive leadership, capacity development and advocacy for women’s empowerment.
The council, she added, recognised the director-general’s dedication to advancing women’s professional growth and promoting inclusive representation, describing these efforts as important to building stronger institutions and empowering communities.
Congratulating Benjamins-Laniyi on her birthday, the NUJ FCT Council wished her good health, renewed strength and greater accomplishments in the years ahead.
“We pledge our continued collaboration as she advances gender equality, women’s leadership in the media and empowerment for all Nigerians,” Ike said.
