Kano gets 4 new transmission substations, adds 544MW capacity

By Stella Odueme

The Federal Ministry of Power, in collaboration with the Kano State Government and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), has commissioned four transmission substations in Kano State, adding 544MW of electricity wheeling capacity to the state and the national grid.

The facilities, located at Walalambe, Kumbotso, Dakata and Dan-Agundi, are expected to improve electricity supply, reduce pressure on existing infrastructure and support growing industrial, commercial and residential demand.

At Walalambe, a new 80MW-capacity substation has been installed with two 40MVA transformers. Kumbotso has received 300MVA capacity at the 330kV level, alongside 100MVA transformers, while Dakata and Dan-Agundi have each gained an additional 100MVA transformer at the 132kV level.

According to the ministry, the projects will ease congestion at overloaded substations, improve bulk electricity transmission and provide additional capacity to meet previously unmet demand.

The Walalambe substation has six outgoing feeders designed to supply the Tokarawa Industrial Area, Eastern Bypass, Maiduguri Road, Hadejia Road and adjoining communities.

The project has also facilitated the reconnection of Lee Group, a major industrial enterprise, to the national grid after more than three decades of operating independently of the grid.

Similarly, the rehabilitation and capacity upgrade at the fire-damaged Dan-Agundi substation have strengthened electricity supply to Kano ancient town, the Emir’s Palace and neighbouring communities.

The ministry said the projects would contribute to industrial growth, improve the operating environment for small businesses, create employment opportunities and enhance the welfare of residents through improved electricity infrastructure.

In a statement issued by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Minister, Adeola Labzy, the ministry said the projects aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

It added that the investments demonstrated the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening the power sector and translating infrastructure development into economic opportunities across the country.
