The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has reassured the mother of slain party supporter, Ifeanyi Nwolie, of his continued support, pledging to stand by her following the death of her son.
Obi reportedly offered to provide the bereaved mother with the equivalent of 15 months of the financial support her late son regularly sent her, with the payment covering the period up to December 2027.
The former Anambra State governor gave the assurance when he visited the family after attending Nwolie’s burial in his hometown of Afa, Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State.
Nwolie was reportedly shot during a political activity involving the NDC on October 10, 2026.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR), the NDC presidential candidate was quoted as assuring the grieving mother that she could count on him following her loss.
“My humble pledge to the mother is that God Almighty, whom it pleased to bring Ifeanyi home, has also given her another son in me to support her, as Ifeanyi used to,” Obi said.
In a message shared on his X handle, Obi said he travelled from the United Kingdom to Nigeria and proceeded to Enugu to attend the burial of his supporter.
He described Nwolie’s death as a painful reminder of the human cost of the country’s political climate, urging political actors to reject violence as the 2027 general elections approach.
“Late Ifeanyi Nwolie was one of my supporters who participated in the recent NDC party political activity marred by violence on October 10, 2026. Tragically, he was shot.
“His death is a painful reminder of the devastating human cost of our nation’s current toxic political environment,” Obi said.
He appealed to candidates contesting elections at the federal, state and local government levels to conduct their campaigns peacefully and focus on issues capable of improving the lives of Nigerians.
