The Isamic State of West African Province, ISWAP, has named Mallam Bako Gorgore as their new leader.
This followed the killing of the notorious head, Sani Shuwaram in an air attack by the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
PRNigeria said that Shuwaram died from gunshot wounds he had sustained when military fighter jets raided ISWAP camp at the Sabon Tumbuns general area of Lake Chad.
Several other members of the sect are suspected to have died in the airstrikes carried out by super Tucano jets and other aircraft of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) in the Marte axis.
According to PRNigeria source “Shuwaram was among terrorists injured by NAF air interdiction missions conducted at Sabon Tumbuns near Kirta Wulgo in February 2022. Subsequent airstrikes in the following days might have led to his death alongside other ISWAP fighters where they were receiving treatment including Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi,” the source added.
