AMAC chairman splashes N30m on 1,024 indigent students

The chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) Hon. Christopher Maikalangu has shared the sum of N30million to 1,024 indigent students in the twelve political wards of the council.

He disclosed this during the flag off of the disbursement of 2023 scholarship award to the students in tertiary institutions, yesterday.

During the symbolic presentation of the money to 60 select students in AMAC town hall in Apo Resettlement, the chairman said the scholarship programme is part of his campaign promises he made to the residents.

Undergraduates from universities received N30,000 each, Polytechnics/Colleges of Education get 20,000 each respectively, while post graduates received N50,000.

Maikalangu revealed that the student beneficiaries were selected from the 12 political wards in the area council, adding that the administration would increase the amount to N50,000 in 2024.

He said the beneficiaries were also selected from the 12 political wards, irrespective of their political, religious and tribal affiliations, adding that the administration is also considering awarding scholarship to students in AMAC to study in universities outside the country,

According to him, “The beneficiaries of this scholarship award were selected from the 12 wards of the area council and they were picked irrespective of whether they are in PDP, APC and LP or whether they are Gbagyi, Hausa, Igbo or any other tribe, but as far as they reside in AMAC.”

Maikalangu also called on companies operating in AMAC to contribute to the development of education in the area council, as part of their corporate social responsibility.

In his remarks, head, department of education in AMAC, Dr Ibrahim Sheriff commended the AMAC chairman for the giant stride in the education of indigent students in the area council.

Sheriff also disclosed that the AMAC chairman has equally facilitated the admission of about 70 indigent students into the University of Abuja.
