May Day: Ojukwu bemoans plight of Nigerian workers, asks FG to alleviate sufferings

Irked by the plight of Nigerian workers, the executive secretary, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Tony Ojukwu has called for improved working conditions of the workers.

While bemoaning the plight of Nigerian workers, be called for improved working conditions that is capable of alleviating their sufferings.

In a statement commemorating the 2024 international workers Day which is observed every May 1st, globally, the country’s Chief human rights advocate, called on relevant authorities to seek improvement of the existing working conditions of Nigerian workers.

While celebrating the achievements and resilience of workers, he stated that the essential role played by workers in shaping societies and economies globally, can not be overemphasized.

The Executive Secretary further stated that the 2024 International Day of workers underscored the resilience, dedication and sacrifice of Nigerian workers particularly in the face of unprecedented high cost of living in Nigeria.

The Nigeria Chief rights officer reaffirmed the Commission’s position, that ” the NHRC remains unwavering in its commitment to advocating for the rights of all Nigerians, including workers”.

Continuing, the Executive Secretary urged the government to consider the widespread agitation for wage increase and to equally address other areas such as high cost of goods, poor power supply, transportation, healthcare, insecurity and others.

Speaking further, Dr. Ojukwu noted that, from ensuring workers enjoy fair wages, safe working conditions, combating discrimination and exploitation of workers, the Commission remains dedicated in creating a comfortable environment where all workers will be treated with respect and dignity.

He said that this year’s theme “Climate change, safety and Health at work place”, “resonates deeply with the NHRC’S mandate of promoting and protecting the rights of all Nigerians, including their right to upholding the well being, safety and the dignity of workers in all Sectors.”
