New Coalition Formed to Address Nigeria’s Energy Security Challenges

By Jane Okeke

In a significant move aimed at tackling critical issues within the Nigerian oil and gas sector, the Citizens Advocacy for Social and Economic Rights (CASER) has launched the Energy Security Coalition (ESC). This new network comprises various Nigerian-based non-governmental organizations (NGOs) focused on advocating for transparency and effective utilization of the country’s petroleum resources.

The establishment of the ESC comes in response to the ongoing challenges surrounding the availability and pricing of premium motor spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol. As a vital component of Nigeria’s economy, PMS pricing has become a contentious topic, with widespread implications for citizens across all socio-economic classes. The Coalition emphasizes the urgent need for accurate information and proactive solutions to these pressing issues.

Despite these challenges, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd (NNPCL) is striving to fulfill its role as the supplier of last resort, as outlined in the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA). This commitment is critical for ensuring national energy security and economic stability.

The ESC aims to foster collaborative efforts among stakeholders to promote a citizen-driven intervention in the oil and gas industry. By prioritizing the welfare of Nigerians, the Coalition seeks to influence government policies and programs in the petroleum sector, offering a pathway to a more stable and prosperous future.

Barr. Frank Tietie, the Convener of the ESC and Executive Director of CASER, has extended an invitation to all NGOs in Nigeria to join the Coalition in addressing key issues, including the accurate pricing of petroleum products, the transition to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), and combating oil theft.

Tietie emphasized that a united approach is essential for promoting a transparent governance framework in the petroleum industry that benefits all Nigerians.

“The task of finding solutions to Nigeria’s myriad problems requires collective efforts and engagement,” Tietie stated. “Together, we can advocate for a well-intentioned governance regime that aligns with the interests of both the citizens and the Federal Government.”

The formation of the Energy Security Coalition signals a critical step towards enhancing the integrity and functionality of Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, with the aim of ensuring that the nation’s energy resources serve the best interests of its people.
