Kogi govt allocates over N7bn for renovation of additional 88 PHCs

The Kogi State Government has earmarked more than N7 billion for the renovation of an additional 88 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across the state’s 21 local government areas.

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo made the announcement during an event at the Model Primary Healthcare Centre in Felele, Lokoja, where he officially handed over the sites of the 88 PHCs to contractors for revitalization. The governor was represented by Dr. Abdulazeez Adams, the State Commissioner for Health.

Dr. Adams explained that the new round of revitalization follows the ongoing overhaul of over 70 PHCs, which are at various stages of completion after the state government approved the initiative in March 2024.

A statement from Ismaila Isah, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media, emphasized that the renovation of these PHCs will elevate more than 150 healthcare facilities across the state to functional Level-2 standards, underscoring the government’s commitment to improving healthcare access throughout Kogi.

“The upgrade of 88 additional Primary Healthcare Centres marks an exciting new chapter in the state’s healthcare development,” Governor Ododo said. “Together with the ongoing renovation of 70 PHCs, this initiative is an important step towards achieving universal health coverage for our people.”

He also highlighted the support of the World Bank for this project, noting that the N7 billion commitment demonstrates the government’s resolve to enhance citizens’ quality of life.

Governor Ododo thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his commitment to improving healthcare accessibility for ordinary Nigerians, particularly at the grassroots level, and also recognized the contributions of former Governor Yahaya Bello’s administration in strengthening the state’s healthcare sector.

The governor urged contractors to maintain high standards of professionalism and ensure the timely completion of the projects, which are expected to be finished within four months. He also called for collaboration with local authorities and stakeholders to ensure the effective and inclusive execution of the projects, with a focus on safeguarding both the social and environmental aspects of the revitalization efforts.

Governor Ododo stressed the importance of government oversight to ensure that the projects are well-supervised under the coordination of the State Ministry of Health.
