The Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria (FTAN) has called for greater private sector participation in developing Nigeria’s tourism industry, saying investment in the sector should not be limited to wealthy individuals or multinational corporations.
Speaking ahead of the 2026 Nigerian Tourism Investment Forum and Exhibition (NITIFE), FTAN President Dr. Aliyu Badaki said the forum is designed to connect investors with tourism opportunities across the country while complementing the Federal Government’s efforts to attract investment into the sector.
According to him, the private sector is leveraging its networks and business relationships to identify prospective investors who may not ordinarily have direct access to government officials.
The President explained that investment in tourism can take different forms, ranging from large-scale projects to modest financial support for entrepreneurs and small businesses within the industry.
He noted that individuals can become investors by supporting creative enterprises, artisans, and tourism entrepreneurs, stressing that even relatively small investments can help businesses grow and contribute to the sector’s development.
Officials said the 2026 NITIFE, scheduled for July 30 and 31, will provide a platform for investors, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and industry stakeholders to explore business opportunities and establish partnerships that will advance Nigeria’s tourism transformation agenda.
Dr. Badaki described the event as a follow-up to earlier stakeholder engagements organised by the Nigerian Tourism Development Authority (NTDA), adding that the current administration of FTAN is focused on delivering practical outcomes rather than prolonged discussions.
FTAN President announced that the forum will feature high-profile participants, including diplomats, investors, state commissioners responsible for tourism, and other key industry players.

As part of the programme, FTAN said it will hold a roundtable with state commissioners for tourism to identify tourism destinations with strong investment potential and discuss strategies for their development and promotion.
On the National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR), FTAN reiterated its support for the institute’s training mandate but expressed reservations about aspects of its new law that could conflict with the operations of private sector businesses.
He maintained that while NIHOTOUR should continue its role as a professional training institution, any provisions capable of undermining private enterprises should be reviewed through stakeholder consultations.

said the Minister of Tourism is already facilitating discussions involving NIHOTOUR, the Nigerian Tourism Development Authority (NTDA), and private sector operators to clarify institutional responsibilities and address areas of concern.
He further explained that the Tourism Transformation Mandate seeks to restructure and strengthen the entire tourism value chain through improved collaboration, investment, and institutional reforms.
Dr. Badaki also appealed to the media to support the initiative through sustained publicity, describing journalists as critical partners in raising public awareness and promoting the opportunities available within Nigeria’s tourism sector.
