LG Electronics has commissioned its 21st solar-powered borehole in Nigeria, extending its community water initiative to Osan Agba, Oke Oka Akoko, in Akoko South West Local Government Area of Ondo State.

The intervention is aimed at bringing reliable access to clean water closer to underserved communities while promoting sustainable infrastructure powered by renewable energy.

For residents of Oke Oka Akoko, the significance of the project goes beyond the commissioning ceremony, as reliable access to water is expected to reduce the time and effort spent searching for water, improve household convenience and hygiene, and provide a dependable resource for the wider community.
The solar-powered facility is designed to operate independently of the national electricity grid, combining clean-water access with renewable energy technology.
The project also reflects the evolution of LG Electronics’ corporate social responsibility efforts from individual interventions to a broader approach focused on sustainable community infrastructure and locally identified needs.

Speaking at the commissioning, the Chairman of Akoko South West Local Government, Hon. Ayọ Ajana, described the intervention as an example of how private-sector partnerships could complement government efforts in addressing critical development needs.

“Water is fundamental to the well-being of every community, and this is the kind of intervention whose impact people can feel every day,” Ajana said.

He said the project demonstrated what responsible private-sector participation could achieve in community development, adding that the local government and community had a responsibility to protect and sustain the facility.

The Adedibu of Osan Àgbà Oka, Hon. Ologunbaba Ruben (Ṣóyọ), also described the project as a significant intervention that would benefit residents beyond the commissioning ceremony.

“For us, this is more than the commissioning of a borehole. It is about meeting a need that touches our people every day. Families will use this water, our children will benefit from it, and the entire community has a responsibility to preserve what has been provided,” he said.

Ruben expressed appreciation to LG Electronics for extending its community intervention beyond major cities to communities such as Osan Agba.

Similarly, Chief Darusa Adedibu, Olugbedere of Igbedere, Osan Àgbà Oka, said the project underscored the importance of taking development closer to the people.

With the commissioning of the facility, LG Electronics’ expanding clean-water programme continues to combine technology, sustainability and community participation in addressing basic infrastructure needs.
