The Association of Business Educators of Nigeria (ABEN), Imo State Chapter, has honoured renowned geoscientist, researcher and university educator, Dr. Obinna Chigoziem Akakuru, with the Distinguished Award of an Accomplished Scholar, in recognition of his outstanding scholarly accomplishments and contributions to research and higher education.
The award was presented to him recently during the association’s inauguration and award ceremony held at the CIBN Hall, Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri, Imo State.
ABEN had earlier invited Akakuru as a Special Guest of Honour and Award Recipient, describing the recognition as a celebration of his accomplishments as a scholar. Akakuru, who is currently based in the United States, was represented at the ceremony by Dr. Uchechukwu Oscar Iheanacho, who received the award on his behalf.
Reacting to the honour, Akakuru expressed profound appreciation to the leadership and members of ABEN, ably led by its Imo State Chairman, Sir Emeka Cyril Ibe, describing the award not merely as recognition of past achievements, but as an encouragement to pursue even greater academic and societal impact.
“For me, this award is more than a recognition of what has been achieved; it is an inspiration to strive for even greater impact. Scholarships must go beyond publications, citations and academic titles, they must translate knowledge into solutions that address real societal challenges and improve lives. Ultimately, the true measure of scholarship is the difference it makes in the lives of others,” he said.
He dedicated the award to his family, mentors, colleagues, students and collaborators who have supported his academic journey, while expressing gratitude to ABEN for finding him worthy of the prestigious recognition.
Prof. Akakuru has built a growing international profile as a geoscientist, hydrogeologist and environmental researcher, with expertise spanning groundwater resources, environmental pollution, health-risk assessment and the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning to geoscience. His recent research also addresses emerging contaminants, including PFAS and microplastics, and the use of data-driven approaches for environmental monitoring and prediction.
With more than 100 scholarly publications and significant international citations, he has been recognized among the top 500 researchers in Nigeria based on Scopus/SciVal data. Beyond research, he contributes to the global scientific community through editorial and peer-review roles with international journals.
In the United States, he has held teaching appointments at Miami University and the University of Cincinnati, Ohio, combining research with the training and mentoring of students.
His work increasingly bridges geoscience, environmental sustainability and artificial intelligence, with collaborations addressing groundwater security, pollution and sustainable management of natural resources.
The Distinguished Award of an Accomplished Scholar adds to his growing record of recognition and reflects the expanding international visibility of his scholarship and his continuing commitment to impactful research, teaching and mentorship.
