Zamfara Carnage: NEMA confirms 54 dead, 7,000 displaced

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed that 54 persons were killed by suspected cattle rustlers in Bawar Daji District, Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara State on Wednesday last week.
It also affirmed that a woman and her child were among those who lost their lives during the attacks.
NEMA on Wednesday said that its report was based on-the-spot assessment conducted by its members of staff who recorded 71 persons injured with over 7,000 displaced persons.
NEMA said that the attacks affected Baudi, Tungan Turkish, Doka, Zanoka, Akuzo and Dogon Ruwa villages.
a�?About 30 houses and other essential commodities were razed, also 1,000 cattle were carted away by men of the underworld,a�? it said.
NEMAa��s Head for Sokoto Operations, Suleiman Muhammad, who led other officials of the agency on the assessment, said that the governmenta��s delegations sent to the area had to suspend their visit due to security challenges.
Muhammad said that the displaced persons, mostly women and children, were taking refuge in neighbouring Hayin Dan Bawa, Anka and Gusau, the state capital.
The agency is expected to prepare a comprehensive report to be forwarded to the federal government for necessary action.
Last week, an online news medium reported how bandits attacked Bawar Daji in Anka Local Government Area, killing over 32 persons.
Governor Abdula��Aziz Yari Abubakar of Zamfara State and security chiefs and members of the State Executive Council (SEC) on Friday visited the Emir of Anka over the killings.
Governor Yari during the condolence visit directed the security agencies to shoot anybody found with arms a�?in the bush.a�?
