Galaxy Backbone to protect sensitive govt. data

By Chuks Oyema-Aziken

The Federal Government on Tuesday disclosed that Information and Communications Technology service provider, Galaxy Backbone Limited will become a vehicle to warehouse and safeguard sensitive government data.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Boss Mustapha stated this while receiving the newly appointed Managing Director of Galaxy Backbone Limited, Prof. Muhammad Bello in his office in Abuja.

The SGF said it had become necessary for the country to have a place where data is stored and protected.

He said this will further enhance the country’s entire governance mechanism transition into e-governance, which will lead to less human contact and paper elements.

Mustapha said this will also reduce corruption largely induced by much human contact.

He added that Galaxy backbone which is wholly owned by the federal government, will champion the whole process of transiting into e-governance.

“It is the desire of President Muhammadu Buhari that before the expiration of his tenure, we will transit fully to e-governance and Galaxy Backbone will pay a major role in the provision of the platform. We want to ease the process of doing business,” the SGF added.

In his response, the MD of Galaxy Backbone while appreciating president Buhari for his appointment, harped on the need to harness the operations of Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs.

He added that before the establishment of Galaxy Backbone, the MDAs were operating in silos, with most of their data hosted from outside the country. This according to him, was very wrong security wise.

“Galaxy Backbone is going to provide network services, network platforms, as well as the necessary hardware and storage of important government data,” he added.
