The 19 Northern Speakers’ Conference of Northern Speakers’ Forum (NSF) has called for prompt implementation of financial autonomy of state legislature and judiciary to enable the two arms of government functions effectively.
The speakers made the call in Kaduna where they met to discuss the issue, among others which included rape, domestic violence, youth unemployment bedevilling northern region, yesterday
In a communiqué issued at the end of a day meeting under the chairmanship of Kebbi state House of Assembly Speaker, Rt Hon lsmaila Abdulmumini Kamba, the speakers decried the continued insecurity in the north with telling effects on lives and property.
To this end, the conference challenged Heads of the nation’s security agencies to strategise enough towards seeing the end of the situation occasioned by Boko Haram in the Northeast as well as banditry including herdsmen/farmers crisis within and outside the North.
The conference appreciates the courage of President, Muhammadu Buhari for signing the Executive Order 10, which allows for financial autonomy for state legislatures and judiciary, into law.
According to the communiqué, this would definitely strengthen arms of governments as well as deepening democracy at the state level.
Consequently, the lawmakers enjoined state governors in the country to immediately implement this constitutional provision in their respective states “without further delay so as not to impede or prejudice our nascent democracy.”
Meanwhile, the state Assemblies within northern region will soon promulgate laws “with punitive measures on rape and domestic violence to curb the ugly trend in the region,” the communiqué stated.
