Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC), Professor Mahmoud Yakubu on Monday took a temporary bow out in the affairs of the commission following the expiration of his first tenure in office.
It would be recalled the Professor Yakubu was appointed along with five other National Commissioners on November 9, 2015 by President Muhammadu Buhari
Speaking while handing over the affairs of the commission to Air Vice Marshall Ahmed Muazu, Professor Yakubu noted that he would be leaving the commission along with the five Commissioners whose tenure also ended November 9
“It would be unconstitutional for me to remain in office beyond today, since my renomination by the President is yet to be confirmed by the Senate.” Professor Yakubu noted, even as he however noted that he would return when the Senate confirms his reappointment by the President
In his acceptance remarks, Air Vice Marshall Magu thanked the chairman and other members of the commission for having the confidence in him to oversee the affairs of the commission pending the return of professor Yakubu.
He assured that he would follow the footsteps of Yakubu in all that he would do in the commission in the little period he would be doing so.
It would be recalled that President Buhari has already nominated and forwarded the names of five people, including his media aise, Lauretta Onochie to the Senate as replacements for the ongoing five National Commissioners.
