As Professor Mahmood Yakubu steps down today to step up higher on the job

Today marks the end of the first tenure of Professor Mahmood Yakubu as the INEC Chairman and to await his screening by the Senate following his re-appointment by President Mohammadu Buhari on Tuesday, October 27, 2020. The Centre for Transparency Advocacy notes with delight that Professor Yakubu even though re-appointed has followed due process by handing over and stepping down albeit temporarily before his confirmation. Due process has been his hallmark hence the tremendous achievements and progress made in INEC in the last five years.

CTA commends this gesture and hopes that this sets an example for other public office holders to emulate and uphold the tenets of democracy in Nigeria. We wish him well and further call on the Senate to expedite the process of confirming Professor Mahmood Yakubu so as to start early in the works ahead especially the commencement of the Continuous Voter Registration across the country and preparations towards all outstanding off-seasons elections and the 2023 General Elections.

The Centre For Transparency Advocacy (CTA) is a consortium of several Civil Society Organizations with a large repertoire of media partners birthed with the sole purpose of assisting the government and the people in ensuring that effective services are rendered by government institutions especially those that have been mandated specific statutory functions.
