Gusau re-elected as AFN President

The Athletic Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has re-elected Eng. Ibrahim Shehu Gusau to office as President to continue to steer the affairs of the federation for the next four year. 

Also, Sunday Adeleye and Nneka Ikem Anibeze equally got elected as the first and second Vice-President of federation respectively.

The election was observed by the immediate-past Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung; South-Sudan AFN President, Gen. Samir Khamis LaKo; former member of the House of Representative, Hon. Usenin Ismail.

The event took place at the Jawalry hotel, Birnin Kebbi.

In his acceptance speech, re-elected, Engr. Gusau,  said he will immediately start work towards improved development of sports in the country.

He called on the other faction to come as one family and sit down to resolve the long fight for the betterment of sports in Nigeria.

“Let’s come sit down and work together, if we work together. I can tell you, Athletics Federation of Nigeria would have achieved a lot in the last four years”.

According to the President, the federation has been in court and there were two judgements that of  Federal High Court and Court of Appeal  which confirmed the side of Engr. Gusau as the legal leader of the executive of the federation.

In a goodwill message, the former Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalong, commended the electoral committee under the chairmanship of Mr. Otunba Prince Jambright, for conducting a free, fair and credible election.

He enjoined the new executives to carry everybody along for the development of sports in Nigeria which has been backward.

”We urged delegates to elect individuals of their choice to enhance credible leadership, and I will continue defending democracy in Nigeria for the betterment of this country,” he said.

Also, the President of the South Sudan AFN, Samir Khamis, said electing Engr. Gusau as President and his team will go a long way towards developing sports not only in Nigeria, but in Africa as a whole.

Engr. Gusau scored 20 votes to defeat Uche Nwona, who scored two votes.
