Kano state Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, on Wednesday, announced the donation of 100 hectares of land to the Nigerian Navy, where the Kano proposed Kano Naval Base would be established.
Governor Ganduje made the donation following the approval by the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo, for the establishment of a Naval Base in Kano, as part of efforts to boost security in the state.
The AUTHORITY reports that Ganduje had, few months ago in Abuja, appealed to the CNS for the establishment of a Naval Base in the state.
The CNS relocated to Kano on September 1 for a five-day Annual Conference organized in his honour, with the theme: ‘Enhancing Nigeria’s Maritime Security for Improved National Prosperity.’
On Wednesday, the CNS delivered a lecture at Bayero University Kano (BUK) entitled: The Role of Navy In National Development.’
The CNS announced the approval for the establishment of a Naval Base in Kano during a courtesy visit to Ganduje on Wednesday morning.
According to him, “Your Excellency I am glad to inform you that, the Nigerian Naval Board, has approved the establishment of Naval Base in Kano. Which falls among other Naval Bases approved by the Board in some selected states.”
He commended Ganduje for his efforts in seeing the successful establishment of a Naval Base in Kano, adding that, “we are equally thankful to His Excellency’s effort and support, by allocating 100 hectares of land for our new Naval Base in the state.
“We have already appointed the Acting Commander of the Base, who is Captain Muhammad Abubakar Alhassan. Who should, henceforth, be part of the security architecture of the state.”
He said the establishment of a Naval Base in Kano, “will contribute to showcase the effort of the Nigerian Navy for keeping the nation as one indivisible nation.”
In his remarks, Ganduje commended the Nigerian Navy for choosing Kano for their Conference.
He stated that, “Your choice of Kano shows how confident you are concerning the security and safety of the state. It also tells others that Kano is safe, secured and peaceful.
“We are very grateful for the choice of Kano to have a Naval Base. This is highly instrumental. It gives us more and more courage to be above board in securing our dear state.
“The newly appointed acting Commander of your Naval Base in Kano, will now be part of our security architecture. He will always be invited for our routine security meetings.”
The CNS who hails from Kano state, also paid a courtesy visit to the Palace of Emir of Kano, His Highness, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, where he was received by the Senior Counsellor and other Chiefs, as the Emir was out of town at the time.of his visit.
