Anambra Guber: How Obiora Okonkwo is tearing Catholics apart

Chief Obiora Okonkwo has unarguably, like many others, contributed to the projects of the Church. However, in matters like this, it is not what one has done, but the spirit or motive for which one does them.

As part of his electioneering, Chief Obiora Okonkwo in the quest for votes is tearing the church, especially in Onitsha Archdiocese apart.

At different fora, he bragged that the Archbishop of Onitsha, Most Rev. Dr. Valerian Okeke must support him. He often boasts that he single handed built the Archbishop’s house, some buildings at the Holy Family Village, Amansea and he also talked about his commitments to Shanahan University.

What is causing confusion now is that he assembled all the CWO Organisers and secretaries in the entire Onitsha Archdiocese and gave them 2 million to share and 500,000 for their purse. He told them that he was the one who built the house of the bishop from scratch. He also said he bought Prado worth 75 million for the Archbishop. Based on this, he now says the Archbishop is morally bound to support him and even direct other Bishops to do the same.

Justifying his position, Obiora Okonkwo also said that part of the reason the Church supported Gov. Willie Obiano for the second term was because he built a house at Aguleri for the Auxiliary Bishop, Most Rev. Dr. Dennis Isiuzor and that he had done far more than Obiano.

Because of Okonkwo’s position, the Church led by Archbishop Okeke in the Province is in disarray over the candidate to support. The issue is whether to go for merit or for a man who has helped the Church a lot.
