Lack of morals and disregard of civic responsibilities are the major challenges of the society, says Major-General Collins Ihekire (Rtd), the Board Chairman of ‘Morals Path To Follow Foundation’, a nongovernmental organisation seeking for a better Nigeria.
General Ihekire made the submission in a message at the end of a scholarship, programme organized by the Foundation in collaboration with a private school, Chessy Kiddies Academy, Abuja, for pupils and students in Zauda community, Dei-Dei,a suburb of the Federal Capital Territory.
He explained that indiscipline among citizens in various guises had posed serious challenges to growth and development of the nations, stressing that morals and civic education would help build the character of the individuals for a better society.
He decried the excessive quest for material things, as well as frivolous and obscene attachments to wealth as indices for assessments of growth and achievements in the society, as part of the causes of moral decadence.
In a remark, the Coordinator of the Foundation, Mr. Chikezie Allwell Chinkata, said the scholarship programme was designed to inculcate morals and civic knowledge among pupils and students to help check the menace of moral decadence in the society.
Mr. Chinkata noted that the programme started with two-day intensive lectures on morals and civic knowledge for pupils and students in the area and finally examination was conducted, for scholarships to the candidates who excelled in the selection exercise which would be in series.
He said the exercise which was the first by the Foundation in the FCT, would be extended to other parts of the country and beyond in the near future.
According to the Coordinator, the results of candidates who did well in the examinations, written by over 50 pupils, will be communicated to them through the collaborating schools.
Speaking on behalf of the resource persons, the Focal Programme Instructor, Miss Miracle Nnaji, urged the candidates to take the lectures seriously as what they were taught would always be useful to them in future, even if they were not successful in the scholarship offer.
