Indications emerged on Monday that Kano State House of Assembly is set to review the service year of civil servants in the state from 35 to 40 years, while age of retirement may be reviewed upward from 60 to 65 years.
This development followed a Motion of Urgent Public Importance, moved by the Majority Leader of the Assembly, Alhaji Labaran Abdul Madari, during Monday’s Plenary.
Majority Leader Madari’s Motion contained the recall of Kano state Pension and Gratuity Law, Kano House of Assembly Service Commission Law, and Kano State Road Traffic Law, which are subsequent for review and approval.
The Assembly Majority Leader submitted that the review of Kano Pension and Gratuity Law is geared towards assuaging the problems and sufferings of pensioners and families of dead civil servants, who are obliged to claim their entitlements.
According to him, the amended law would also pave way for extension of retirement age, for civil servants from 60 to 65 years, while year of service would be reviewed from 35 to 40 years.
He also advocated for timely release of benefits and gratuities for pensioners.
More so, the Monday’s Plenary presided over by Speaker Hamisu Ibrahim Chidari, received two letters from the Executive Arm, seeking for the amendment of Kano state and Local Governments Revenue Administration, Codification and Consolidation Amendment no. 2, and Draft Bill of Kano State Emirate Council Law 2019.
Reading the letter on the floor of the Assembly , Speaker Chidari noted that the correspondence said the amendment of the Revenue Law would ensure improved revenue generation, transparency and accountability.
The letter further stated that, the Executive Council proposed the review of the Kano state Council of Emirs, according to section 4, sub- section 2 of Kano state Emirate Council Law 2019.
The Assembly, however, committed the bills to the relevant committees for further legislative action.
The Assembly adjourned its sitting to Tuesday, December 20, 2022, in line with a Motion filed by Majority Leader Madari.
