The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has said more plans are underway to strengthen engineering profession in the country.

President of COREN, Professor Sadiq Abubakar during a press briefing ahead of the 31st engineering Assembly in Abuja, yesterday, disclosed that in line with the Council’s Act, the Engineering Regulation Monitoring had drew a roadmap that expand the technical departments from five to seven.

He said scope of activities for the council will also be expanded to ten sectors including Power, oil & gas, Aviation, Mining, Maritime and Telecommunication.

“We have expanded our roadmap to strengthen the engineering profession, which is based on the Council’s Act. The blueprint will bring about technical committees and Expatriate Monitoring Committees undergoing inauguration in states of the Federation to facilitate the ERM activities”

Abubakar listed other areas to include Transport, Agro-Allied, Manufacturing & Production in addition to the Construction Industry.

The President also revealed that the new operational structure of COREN had translated into inspectorates cascaded from headquarters to the six geopolitical zones and ultimately to all states.

“This would be re-enforced with the establishment of partnerships with key stakeholders using varied modes of engagements to ensure effective coverage of the entire country”

On revoking license of erring engineers, the president of COREN explained that most of the engineers are not registered with the body, which will be difficult for any stringent measures to be taken against them.

He said during the 31st COREN Assembly slated for August, with the theme: “Entrenching and strengthening engineering practitioners code of conduct for resilient engineering practice in Nigeria” discussions will be around standards and its sustainability.

Abubakar disclosed that President of the country Bola Tinubu and other personalities are expected to grace the occasion.

COREN was established by Decree 55 of 1970 and amended by Decree 27 of 1992, now “Engineers (Registration) (Amendment) Act No. 3, 2018.
