Traders desert market over cult clash in Ebonyi

Following a clash  between rival cults in a popular market known as Nkwuagu Market located along the Abakaliki/Afikpo Expressway, traders have deserted the market for the safety of their lives and properties as many have already been reportedly killed.

It was gathered that the cult clash which started last week , created panic among traders, and paralyzed business activities at the market located along Abakaliki/Afikpo Expressway.

Ebonyi State Police command has confirmed the arrest of many personalities and youths over alleged involvement in cult clashes in the State.

It was gathered  that two cult rival groups clashed recently at the Nkwagu market of the state, resulting in the alleged killing of some youths in area.

A reliable source said: “There is silent cult war in Abakiliki and its environs and about four persons, including a graduate have been killed 

“For four days now, this development has forced business owners to close at the Nkwagu axis of the military cantonment, where the first and the second attacks took place.

“Again, youths in the same area and families have fled for fear of being attacked.

“Traders at the local market, just after cantonment, have equally locked their shops for fear of being attacked by the armed cultists.”

The incident  attracted heavy presence  of security agencies, especially the police and the military to quench the escalation of the attacks.

Reacting to the incident, the spokesperson of the Ebonyi State Police command, SP, Onome Onovwakpoyeya who confirmed the cult clashes revealed that an investigation was still ongoing.

“Concerning the cult clashes, investigation is ongoing and several persons have been arrested,” she explained.
