Poverty Alleviation: Reps okay inclusion of PWDs in intervention programmes

By Mercy Aikoye

The House of Representatives has called for inclusion of persons with disabilities (PWD) in poverty alleviation programmes of the Federal Government

This followed the adoption of a motion urgent national importance by Rep. Bashiru  Dawodu ( APC-Lagos) during plenary in Abuja on Thursday.

Presenting the motion, Dawodu Said  the formal President Muhammed Buhari signed the violence against persons Prohibition Act in 2015.

He said the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, recently launched the Renewal Hope Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) without putting into consideration  PWDs, in violation of the Disability Act 2018.

He said the programme involved the transfer of one N1trillion at N25,000 each to 15 million households, and that most poverty alleviation carried out by State Governments excluded the PWDs.

He said failure to capture PWDs in the poverty alleviation programmes had led to persistent poverty and further increased the gap between the poor and the rich.

He further call on the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty alleviation to create a stand alone committee for persons with disability in every programme of the Ministry.

The lawmakers therefore call on the state Governments and local Government in Nigeria to include Persons with Disabilities in every programme of the state.
