Customs hands over $54,330 bribe seized from tramadol importers to EFCC

From Anthony Nwachukwu, Lagos

Comptroller Dera Nnadi of the Tin Can Island Port Command (TCIP) of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), has handed over the $54,330 bribe from some tramadol importers, to the Lagos Zonal Commander of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Michael Wetkas.

The tramadol, valued at over N856 million, was falsely declared as electrical appliances; and when intercepted a few months back, the importers offered a cash bribe of $54,330 but failed to compromise the customs officers.

At the handover of the cash at the TCIP on Tuesday, Nnadi stated that the import and consequent bribe attempt contravened Section 233 of the Nigeria Customs Service Act (NCAA) 2023.

While reiterating the stance of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, on zero compromise for corruption, he commended the officers for resisting the tempting offer in the interest of professional ethic and national security.

Nnadi further commended and described his predecessor, Compt. Oloyede, under whose watch the seizure was made, as a good example of upright officers in the NCS.

Meanwhile, the two suspects arrested in connection with the two containers are currently being investigated by the National Agency for Food Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) for possible prosecution, he disclosed.

On his part, Wekas said the development was a victory for the country and all security agencies, especially the customs officers directly involved.
