Lekki Port berths largest container vessel in Nigeria

From Anthony Nwachukwu, Lagos

The Lekki Deep Seaport Sunday berthed the largest container carrier to sail on Nigerian territorial waters.

Measuring 367M in overall length and breadth of 48.2m, the vessel, “Maersk Edirne”, carried a Gross Registered Tonnage (GRT) of 142,131metric tonnes and a Dead Weight Tonnage (DWT) of 147,340 metric tonnes.

This constitutes 3,376 total cargo onboard, and it was navigated to safety by the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) pilots.

The NPA Managing Director, Mr. Mohammed Bello Koko, had assured during the signing of the Presidential/Ministerial Performance Bond in December 2023 that the agency “was poised to provide the leadership and technical guidance required to maximize the potentials inherent in our marine and blue economy”.

Speaking on the milestone achievement, Bello-Koko commended the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola, for the consistent support and endorsement of the agency’s initiatives and investments in employee upskilling and equipment renewal, stating that it made this milestone seamlessly achievable.

Before now, the largest commercial vessels to sail on Nigerian waters were “MV Stadelhorn” and “MSC Maureen,” which berthed at Onne Port and Tin Can Island Port respectively.

The berthing of a ship measuring 367 meters at Lekki Deep Seaport represents a quantum leap forward. By this feat, in addition to pioneering full automation and facilitation of transhippment, has proven its readiness to exceed stakeholders’ expectations.
