Police arrest 2 suspects terrorizing Enugu Ogbete/Holy Ghost/Railway axis

Police Operatives serving at the Central Police Station (CPS), Uwani, of the Enugu State Command, have arrested two young men suspected to be the architect of the serial armed robbery and other crimes along the Holy Ghost/Railway axis of the state.

The suspects whose identities were revealed as Monday Igwe, aged 25 and Obinna Owoh, aged 27, both from Ebonyi State, were arrested on January 24, 2024, at about 9 pm, according to the spokesperson of Enugu State Police command, DSP Daniel Ndukwe.

Ndukwe said one locally-fabricated cut-to-size gun loaded with a live cartridge was recovered from them, adding that “the operational success followed the directive of the Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, that operational and investigative activities be strengthened in and around Ogbete, Holy Ghost and the Railway axis of Enugu metropolis.”

He assured that “the suspects would be arraigned in court and prosecuted once investigations are concluded.

“The Commissioner reiterates that the on-going strengthened policing activities shall be sustained until the area is totally rid of all acts of crime and criminality.

“He, therefore, enjoins the citizens to continue to support the Police as they frontally combat and flush unrepentant criminals and their activities out of Enugu State,” Ndukwe stated.

Following a viral voice note by a patriotic resident of Enugu, which the Police initially wanted to frustrate through denying its authenticity and asking the maker to present himself to authenticate his claims, but resisted by the citizens, the police swung into action, yielding this result.

It is left to see how successfully they will prosecute the matter given that no person would want to give evidence against a hardened criminal without adequate police protection, which is difficult to come by.

Residents are also urging the police not to relent as there are several of such criminal elements operating around Ogbete market and environs up to the Old Park axis and the bridge leading to Uwani area of Enugu metropolis, just like criminal activities are building up at Trans Ekulu unchecked.

Recently, criminals have gradually been turning Enugu to a nightmare with all kinds of crimes ranging from one-chance robbery, btoad day light robbery with mainly Keke and cult attacks gaining momentum in the hitherto quiet city.
