The Nigeria Cancer Society (NCS) has charged the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT), to sustain the achievements it has recorded over the past one year in an effort to halt cancer in Nigeria.

The President of NCS, Dr.  Adamu  Alhassan Umar,  gave the charge while decorating the Director General of NICRAT, Prof. Usman Malami, as  life member of NCS in Abuja, on Thursday.

He also charged NICRAT to sustain the innovations and initiatives currently being introduced by the Institute to improve cancer research, treatment and care, saying that all cancer advocates in the country are excited at what the  Institute is doing to fight cancer in the country.

“Since you become the Director General of  NICRAT,  you repositioned the role of cancer advocates, the role of researchers and you gave a sense of belonging to cancer patients all over the country.

“You have been part of the Nigeria Cancer Society family for a long while, in fact, let it be on record that you are still part of the executive members of the national officers committee of the NCS and we are not replacing you until when election comes and when you want to contest, you can recontest.

“We truly appreciate you and we pray that you will sustain this giant efforts. Cancer advocates all over the country are very elated and excited with the giant strides, innovations and initiatives that you are bringing into cancer care in the country in bringing everybody on board and making sure that everybody is carried along. We, therefore, decorate you as a life member of the NCS,” Dr. Alhassan said.

Responding, the Director General of NICRAT, Prof. Usman Malami, noted that the Institute was established to reposition the fight against cancer in the country, hence, all efforts, according to him, are targeted  at achieving the mandate of the Institute.

Prof. Malami applauded the efforts of the NCS and all cancer advocates in the country, stressing that their role in complementing the efforts of the federal government to creating awareness about cancer and the need for early detection was commendable.

While dedicating the award to all staff of NICRAT, Prof. Malami said: “The  work of NCS along  with other advocates in the country is actually very noted and appreciated by NICRAT and the government and it is part of the commitment of NICRAT to, in whatever program  we are going to conduct in the area of cancer prevention in the country, to carry NCS as the lead.”

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Army Officers Wives Association (NAOWA), also presented an award to the Director General of NICRAT, Prof. Malami, for what it described as exceptional leadership in the fight against cancer since his appointment as the lead of the Institute.
