Proprietress of FORCEN SCHOOLS in Asese area of Ogun State, Mrs. Ngozi Ejenavi and some parents of the school have said government at all levels should promote cultural values more to address moral decadence amongst younger generation in Nigeria.
They stated this during the school 2024 Cultural Day held in the school.
The proprietress noted that culture which is the way of life of people is gradually losing its values in Nigeria as young people no longer care about cultural heritage of this great country. She added that the way and manners people dressed half naked today in the name of civilisation is alarming particularly most young women.
“We are losing our cultural values already. Young people no longer respect their elders. They behaves just the way they like. They dictates dress sense to their parents and elders in the name of modern civilisation. They want to imbibe the culture of Western countries where young people are given rights to do whatever they like. Most of them don’t even know that Africa and particularly Nigeria has a culture that needs to be uphold.
“Nigeria has a Ministry of Culture & Tourism and i don’t know what they are doing there because the Nigerian society is already being polluted with indecent exposure of our young people. The government can actually communicate the Nigerian cultural values to our children more. Parents cannot do it alone because they won’t follow their children out all the time. From local to the federal government, something should be done to combat the current menace”, Mrs. Ejenavi said.
One of the school parents who also spoke at the Cultural Day, Mrs. Blessing Ator Daniel noted that culture upholds moral standard of a people, adding that it has helped shaped the society in the past. This she said inculcated moral standard and core values such as mode of dressing, ways of greeting, kind of food, how young people respect elders in the society.
“Going by the ways and manners of young generation today, our culture can help control decadence if parents and particularly the government continued emphasizing the important of culture as it is the bedrock of education. The government should checkmate how schools teach culture because no one can teach culture better than the owners. This way, younger people will understand and appreciate the way of life of our society as well as cohabit with one another”, Mrs. Daniel said.
Another parent of the school, Mrs. Gbadamosi mutiat Adebukola stated that cultural values bind people together which makes them strong and united, adding that it makes people learn tolerance and understand brotherhood which paves the path of social harmony, economic improvement and physical well being of the community and the larger society. “Cultural values is very important to our younger generation and generations to come”, Mrs. Gbadamosi said.
